What Peace Dollar Should You Collect?
Collect what you like and enjoy. It is, after all, your coin collection and you should design it the way you see fit. I know coin collectors who have nothing but the 1921 high relief coin in their collection because that is what they want. There are others who only want one of each year and mint mark and don’t care too much about the grade of the coin.
Other collectors attempt to acquire only the highest certified grade of the Peace Dollar. And I have known a few collectors whose interest is in acquiring coins in the year of a certain anniversary such as a wedding or birthday. Whatever plan you decide on take a few minutes to outline it and research the most appropriate coins for your collection. Taking this short step will help you find the exact coins you’re looking for to complete your Peace Dollar collection.
The Peace Dollar is just now coming into its own as a collectible. While they have been purchased and put away by many over the years it is a coin that was not sought out like the Morgan and Trade dollars. Times are changing, though, and the Peace Dollar is now more sought after as prices continue to rise.
Key dates and mint marks will always be big draws and in the case of the Peace Dollar this includes the 1921, 1928 Philadelphia and 1934 San Francisco.
1921 comes to the front since it was the first year of production. It is very difficult to find one in mint state condition because the high relief production led to the coin being very easily damaged and worn.
The 1928 Peace Dollar minted in Philadelphia saw only 360,649 coins struck and is the lowest production year of the coin.
In 1934 the San Francisco mint produced only a little over 1 million of the coins and finding one in mint state condition at a reasonable price is becoming more difficult.
So which of the Peace Dollars will you collect? Enjoy the search, define what you want to accomplish and then go after it.
